Before your visit

Preparation Guidelines

Follow these guidelines to ensure accurate results. When you book, we’ll remind you of any test-specific instructions.

Fasting

  • Fasting means no food or calorie-containing drinks for 8–12 hours before your test (water is allowed).
  • Overnight fasting is common: e.g. nothing after 10 PM if your test is at 8 AM.
  • Avoid chewing gum, sweets, or milk. Black coffee without sugar is usually not allowed during fasting—check with us.
  • If you are on regular medication, ask your doctor whether to take it before a fasting test.

Blood tests

  • Wear loose sleeves so the arm is easily accessible.
  • Stay hydrated (water only for fasting tests) unless otherwise instructed.
  • Avoid heavy exercise right before the draw.
  • Inform the phlebotomist if you have had fainting or discomfort during previous blood draws.

Urine samples

  • First-morning urine is preferred for many tests (more concentrated).
  • Clean catch: wipe the area before collecting to avoid contamination.
  • Collect mid-stream urine into the sterile container provided.
  • Avoid collecting during menstruation for routine urinalysis when possible; inform the lab if submitted.

Stool samples

  • Use the container and spoon provided; do not contaminate with toilet water or urine.
  • Some tests require avoiding red meat, certain vegetables, or medications for a few days—we will give you written instructions.
  • Deliver the sample to the lab as soon as possible (usually within the time frame we specify).

Medications

  • Some medicines affect results. Tell us and your doctor about all medications and supplements.
  • Do not stop prescribed medication unless your doctor advises. We can note your medications on the requisition for interpretation.

Imaging (X-ray, ultrasound)

  • For abdominal ultrasound, you may be asked to fast for 6–8 hours for better visibility.
  • For some X-rays, remove metal objects (jewelry, belts).
  • Pregnancy: inform the staff before any X-ray or nuclear medicine procedure.
